B.A.D. first met Zareen Fava during her time in Cohort 2 of VerticalCrypto Art's Residency programme. A talented papier-mache artist, Zareen is a unique creator within Crypto Art today - combining traditional Naqashi influences with contemporary applications of the blockchain. Enthralled by her creative flair and warm personality, we couldn't wait to sit down and discuss her work!

What is the name by which blockchainart and crypto collectibles community knows you?

Zareen Fava.

What is your professional background and career?

I am a multidisciplinary artist with a background in Naqashi papier-mache technique.

Please give a short statement about yourself, your work, your art, your aesthetics, your vision, and everything else you want people to know about you as a person active in the blockchainart and cryptocollectibles space.

I am a Kashmir-American maker that experiments with different mediums through the NFT medium. I do 3D sculpture featuring Kashmir Naqashi papier-mache technique and design expressed through video art or different dimensional renders. Mostly, I just like to make things exploring culture and play with imaginary ideas from those. I feel cryptoart allows the space and freedom for an artist to study areas in a way that was difficult to achieve previously and approach the work as the science of fun it always could be.

Which is your medium?

Naqashi papier-mache craft is my passion and I use it as a medium in combination with different things to interpret through the NFT medium. Often 3D sculpture illustration involving recycled materials, stop-motion, or playing with tech I find interesting!

How would you describe your art?

I am a maker of “things!” with Naqashi, I combine with other mediums that excite me. It depends on the idea —imaginary, or things I have come upon in my studies. I like to make it playful and fun, a little distorted and also something else too, that I cannot really explain.

Which artworks, artists and styles do you admire the most, and which shaped you the most?

Paul Klee, Henry Darger, Jan Švankmajer, and of course Kashmiri craft, which shaped me the most.

One of your recent artworks?

md3c: multidimensional cosmic cuckoo clock, a 24-hour piece on Async Art. It’s a cuckoo-clock with different stories to tell. This one is a picture book format that shows the story of one on a path of discovery with cats, Yin and Yang.

What led you to the blockchain?

A deep desire to find some place where I could really explore the things I felt compelled to make and find others that would understand and maybe even like it, too!

What is your contribution to the blockchainart, cryptocollectibles and NFT field?

My most centre project is around the preservation of Kashmir heritage on the blockchain, and since entering the metaverse, I test the lengths of my style within the crypto and digital art space.

By using which tools do you tokenize your artworks?

Temple and Metamask at the moment!

On which platforms and dApps are your contents available?

One can find my work on Versum, Teia, VerticalCrypto Art, and Async Art!

As mentioned earlier, it is always a treat to catch up with Zareen! Since her appearance on the VCA Residency, the B.A.D. team has been a huge fan of her work. We can't wait to see what she creates next! Thank you for your time, Zareen! ☻
